    Validation by conditions in rules

So I have a form that has 4 questions with a yes or no answer. If a question is answered as yes, a sub question asking for detail will appear.

I want to make sure that if a question is answered yes, the user is required to complete the detail question, before submitting the record.

I believed it would be possible to do this by putting conditions on a section that would hide or unhide based on if one field contained a yes and the detail field was not blank.

it doesn't seem to work for me, especially when I try to put conditions for all 4 questions.

I welcome any advice anyone has to offer.

Here's a sample - the validation rule is on field5. Save the attached file locally, right click, select design to open in design mode & then you can preview to try it out.

Thank you so much for being so attentive to this board. a lot of us couldn't do our jobs effectively without you.

    I will try this out.

    Thank you,

ok so I added the rule to the required field,

if the previous field = yes, the validation rule is applied.

if I don't put something into screentip field under the rule, I wont get the prompt.

when I do put something in the screen tip field, I will get the prompt for a validation error, but nothing satisfies the validation error and I can not submit the form.

im not sure what im doing wrong.

I'd need to see your form to know what is wrong - you can attach it under the options tab in a reply if you'd like me to take a look.

its a InfoPath form on a SharePoint list, so what i'm trying to send has no bound fields. does that pose a problem?

I also have to be careful of the content I send out. might I send it to you in an email?

Got your form - based on the sample form, I think you are saying each q needs more info if yes? In my sample, I'd thought there was just one field for more info, required if any question was yes.

     Correct,

if q1 = yes, then q1a must contain details.

Here's another sample - perhaps this is closer to what you need. :)
