"There was an error in the custom validation code." Can't open form at all

I'm receiving an error I'm unfamiliar with when attempting to open a form:

InfoPath cannot open the following file: [file name]. There wan an error in the custom validation code.
[Show Details] -> The data in this control has been digitally signed and cannot be changed.

As you can see, no useful specifics are given, and once the "OK" button is clicked, it just quits.

I am familiar with seeing an error such "Some rules were not applied. [Show Details] -> The data in this control has been digitally signed and cannot be changed," but this error does not prevent the form from being opened.
I recreated the latter error by trying to assign a new value to a digitally signed field.

What is different about the first error that would cause it to close InfoPath altogether?

The form template that generated this form contains no custom code, and nothing significant has changed lately. What kind of error prevents you from opening the form entirely?

This makes it sound as though there's a validation on a form field that's attempting to change its value after it's already been digitally signed, but validations don't actually change content, they just test values and mark the field, right?

Actually, the "error in the custom validation code" makes me wonder if there is actual code in the form template. But this says that the XML is read only during the validating event.... so I wouldn't think the code could change anything.
