Hide Section based on Dropdown with Data Connection Values

    Hello,

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction?  I have an InfoPath List customised form.  One of the dropdown boxes gets information from a SharePoint List.  Underneath the dropdown there is a text box within a section which I only need to be visible when the user chooses 'Other' from the dropdown.  I have tried various rules on formatting and none of them hide the section.  I'm running out of ideas and I'm sure this should be pretty simple.

Help would very much be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Claire

It may be as simple as not knowing what the actual value is when the user selects "Other". Can you drag the field that is currently bound to the dropdown onto your form again and change the control to a text box, then preview and select "Other" and see what the value is in the text box? Or add a calculated value bound to the field? If you need help with that, attach your template under Options to a reply. :)

having tried this it doesn't see to work.   I think that because the drop-down is a secondary data source I'm not applying the correct formula.  The data source is a SharePoint list which contains a username, and a raffle responsibility.  The dropdown in InfoPath has two boxes, the first is the dropdown which gets it's raffle details from the SP list, and if the user selects 'other' then the section with the free text box should appear.  I have tried using the ID and also querying the data source but nothing seems to work

You've added a text box bound to the same field and "it doesn't seem to work"? All I'm wondering is if you'd be able to see the actual value stored, which may include the ID and the text description.

     Hi Hilary

Thank you so much for your help, I managed to get my brain into gear and bound the field which then showed the value of what was selected in the dropdown.  I have now applied this to hiding the section and it works.

    thank you once again.

Wonderful, glad you got it! Another place I see this happening is with dates - a lot of time we think what we see in the control is the actual value being stored. But it is just the formatted value. So while your date picker shows 12/8/2015, for example, your form may have a value of 2015-12-08T00:00:00. Which is confusing! :)
