Infopath forms stored in SharePoint with a broken data connection - can I remove so I can open the forms without loosing data

Have thousands of existing InfoPath forms with data in them. They have an external data connection that is going away.

I want to be able to open the old forms and see the data. Is there any way to enable them to open up even if they cannot reach the external data source?

Do any of your main data source fields have default values that depend on the data connection? I would check that first. You can download some of your existing files and open the XML with a text editor (like Notepad, or Notepad ++) to see the data. You can make changes to a test copy of your form, then preview the form with one of the XML you've downloaded from the library so you can see how they behave - here is more on that: http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/hilary/archive/2009/03/13/first-do-no-harm.aspx
