Looking for tips on mapping InfoPath control data to SQL Server fields

A co-worker is writing an InfoPath application. Within it, of course, there are a variety of controls.

The ones that I am wondering about are the text entry controls.

Traditionally, SQL Server table columns are char or varchar type files. However, most InfoPath text controls allow the user to enter unlimited number of text. This results in applications where a user may paste in text that exceeds what is defined in the database, causing a SQL Server error when the insertion occurs.

In most of this application's cases, there isn't an intended limitation on the number of characters for the information being gathered.

Some of the controls are single line text, and it is okay to store plain ASCII upper and lower case type text.

Some of the controls, however, are multi line text that the requirements want Rich Text collected.

The developer has indicated that this causes him to have to establish rules that copy the text from the control into an XML node, rather than simply associating the XML node to the control like other situations.

This seems quite complicated to me.  I am wondering if there are some tutorials on these topics that could be used to gain a better understanding of what is required to make these applications work better.

    Thank you
