I've adapted the following to get the current's users manger's preferred (FullName) into a people picker on a form load. I seem to have been around the houses to get the Manager Full Name and not the account name into the people picker..

 i.e. 2 getuserprofilebyname data connections, multiple rules on several extra fields.

Is there a cleaner, simpler, best practice way?

I know I could use the GetCommonManager option. Both with the GetCommonManager and the 2nd getuserprofilebyname on form load it appears as if the name doesn't resolve fully. i.e. the name text is in a red colour (color).

 OK it must have been all me.

I used a second data connection, this time using the GetCommonManager option and a form load rule

The rule condition is if Account ID is blank (of your people picker for your manager) 

Set DisplayName, AccountID and AccountType ( (of your people picker for your manager) 

Yes really that simple.
