checkbox values as variables instead of constants

I have a checkbox bound to a variable of type decimal.

    Value when cleared: is .46

    Value when checked is .59

(different /km reimbursement rates for different situations)

To make the form easier to maintain I want to parameterize the values of checked and cleared and take them from a variables.  As the rates are changed over time they would only need to change that variable (used elsewhere in the form) or even read it from a list.

I have found that InfoPath sometimes recognizes XPaths in situations where you don't expect it so I tried just copying the XPath for the rate definition variable and pasting it in there instead of the constants.  The parser saw that as a string and wouldn't let me get away with it.

Is there a way of tagging a string so the parser will see it as an XPath?

If not I suppose I could get creative with events. Maybe:

    Value when cleared = low

    Value when checked = high

2 action rules on change :

    if low triprate=KmLowRate

    if high triprate=KmHighRate

I would just have to be careful that the defaults between the check box and triprate are bullet proof.

    Any thoughts?
