    Populate text box if...

     Hi All,

I am very new to InfoPath 2013 and am just getting to grips with it.

I have reached a point where I need to populate a text box with a specific text entry dependent on the selection from a separate drop down box. How is this done?

To explain a little more fully if needed. I am creating a form with our various clients details on. I have populated a drop down box with the client company names names. I need it that when a client is selected the address, phone number and contact name for that client are displayed. I guess my instinct was an If command.

If box A contains "*****" then box 2="******"

Any help is much appreciated. Please keep it simple or well explained.

     Thanks.

    Hello and welcome to InfoPath,

To automatically populate a certain field on an InfoPath form, you will need to create a rule which will set the target field's value (box 2) if the initial field (box 1) reaches a certain condition. So let's say you have Drop-down values: A, B, and C. You will need to create rules for each of these values.

    Example:

Rule 1: Set box 2 to a value of 1; on the condition that box 1 is equal to A
Rule 2: Set box 2 to a value of 2; on the condition that box 1 is equal to B
Rule 3: Set box 2 to a value of 3; on the condition that box 1 is equal to C

It should look similar to this:

I am also attaching a sample form for you to test. You'll be able to see these rules if you click on the box1 field. Hope this helps.

    Re: Populate text box if...

Hi DonStephen, I have repeatedly tried to define rules for auto-populating one field on my form and even following your example, I am still not able to accomplish this. My form is rather simple: One drop down for the user to select DEBIT or CREDIT which in turn needs to populate the Billing Type field with either ZCR or ZDR. I have set the condition but when I choose the field I want to set the value of, my expression drops the actual field name I selected. I am working in 2007 so my view does differ a bit from yours and I think this may also be why I can't open your sample form that you shared. . . Any insight is appreciated.

Here's a copy of the form template sample in IP 2007.

THANK YOU, Hilary. Turns out the rules needed to be set on the drop down field rather than the one I wanted to populate. HA!
