Dynamically connect to a secondary data source using a web service

I am trying to connect a form to an XML file as a secondary data source dynamically in order to populate several drop down lists on the form.

This could be looked at in the following way, "Form type A must select the 'Ford' model xml file. Form type B must select the 'GM' model xml file."

In reality, I am trying to connect the form... to itself. That *might* actually end up being crazy and impossible, but I am sure as heck gonna try. I'd like to pass in the name of the form along with the URL of the form library that houses the form and then pull data out of the form itself. I am trying to self-reference a repeating node structure.

I keep hearing about the ability to use REST web service connections to pass dynamic URL values as a data source... Does anyone have any expertise / know of any tutorials that outline how to do this? Microsoft's example is apparently no longer valid.

     I am confused! :)

Is the data you need in another instance of the form (another XML created by the same template) or is it actually in the currently open file?

At any rate, I've done a little REST - but I don't know that we can create a REST connection to an XML file - Lists, Libraries - but all we'd see from the library is what has been promoted (at least in my little test I just tried, that's what I saw)....
