qRules setup: adding a command_changed event on a datasource in InfoPath 2010

I'm using InfoPath 2010 and a template that already contains custom code. I'm attempting to follow the instructions in this document. Everything is fine until instruction #3 on page 2, which says to "Right click on the Command field in the QdabraRules (Secondary) data source, and select Programming > Changed Event…. " Nothing happens when you right-click on a datasource in InfoPath 2010. Is there a different way to add the QdabraRules_Command_Changed event to FormCode.cs?

Hi - so, are you saying that in your form, if you put the data source task pane to QdabraRules, and you right click on the Command field, nothing happens? Because I know in IP 2010 I did this quite a bit - Do you not even get "Copy XPath"? Can you post a screenshot (under the Options tab) that shows generally what you are doing? Thanks!

Your post made me realize that I was clicking in the wrong place (I was in Data > Data Connections in the ribbon instead of the Fields dialog on the right-hand side). Thanks for the quick and helpful response.

Wonderful - I'll take a look at the docs and see if we can make it more clear - we need to revise that for InfoPath 2013 anyway, so this is a great time to check it for clarity. Let me know if you run into anything else that doesn't make sense, okay?

I am still confused. I am following the QRULES AND SHAREPOINT-RELATED COMMANDS PRODUCT: qRules v2.3 LAST UPDATED: November 10, 2010 .. and it's fairly clear until step #23 Add the SubmitToSharePointListCommand and Test. I find no "Command" field listed in any of my data connections. Following the tutorial, should the fioeld be in my "mapping" connection? Only thing close I see is "Cmd" under Method.

After reading some instructions on other web pages it appears I need to "Inject qRules in your form." but I can't because I am working with two lists. Right?

The Command field is in the QdabraRules data source.

I'm sorry - I don't understand. If this is an InfoPath form that is based off the new blank template, you should be able to inject qRules. What are you trying to do?

Re: qRules setup: adding a command_changed event on a datasource in InfoPath 2010

I have two SharePoint Lists - Parent and Child. Parent list has customized InfoPath form with Data Connection to Receive from Child, then dropped in a Repeating Table into the parent form with this data. Works great... looks great.... But my Repeating Table Controls are not there nor can I activate them in the properties. I always have issues with Repeating Tables. So researching the issue I see where this is a feature in QDabra. I really want to figure out how to use this tool because whenever I have issues and search its always a solution but it seems complicated between the Rule Injector and the QForm template that I use to link my data together with. I had thought it was a plug in to InfoPath and would give me additional menu options with the functionality. Been working with the tutorials to be able to connect and submit data between two separate lists. I managed to lumber all the way through the tutorial document until step #23. I probably need to watch the video tutorials instead. I really should send you my Wonder Woman action figure....you always save me. Corrie

Re: qRules setup: adding a command_changed event on a datasource in InfoPath 2010

So, I think I want to clarify something here - I know in a previous thread, I mentioned that qRules does not work with list forms, but I think I'm just not being as clear as I could be.

First - to talk about the current the form structure you've got:

    csigler:
I have two SharePoint Lists - Parent and Child. Parent list has customized InfoPath form with Data Connection to Receive from Child, then dropped in a Repeating Table into the parent form with this data. Works great... looks great.... But my Repeating Table Controls are not there nor can I activate them in the properties.

The thing is - that repeating child data is going to be just display only in your form. Secondary data connections will not save data back to their source. So, you can open your form, and it all looks good - but if you change an item in that child data, it won't get submitted back to its list. This is why you can't insert an item and so forth. InfoPath is only ever going to submit data in the main data source (barring the addition of code - which is simply not an option in a customized list form).

So - customized list forms cannot have code added. qRules is code. InfoPath (generally) doesn't do what you need it to do without code or qRules - which means you aren't going to be able to use a customized list form for this.

In order to do what you want to do (manage parent and child list data from a single InfoPath form), you would need to:

    1. Start with a new blank form from InfoPath designer. Not a list form - but the "Blank Form" template option. So, you'd open InfoPath Designer, and select Blank Form
    2. In the form, add logic to copy the secondary data into the main data source - this is one of the place you can use qRules - you may have one or more rows of data from the child list to copy into the form, and qRules can give you a rule based way to insert rows to your main data source
    3. In the form, have fields for the Parent and Child item IDs - so qRules can update existing items for you, instead of just creating new
    4. In the form, use the qRules SubmitToSharePointList command to get the form to actually update / add the list items

As far as just the basics of how qRules works, in the documentation that installs with it (you can find this from your start menu shortcuts), there is Quick Start - it may be worth giving that a walkthrough first, so you can see generally how it works.

I hope this helps with some of the confusion!
