InfoPath Dev

Good afternoon,

 I wonder if anyone will be able to help me out.  I have two SharePoint lists which are customised through InfoPath.  One list contains the Personal details of certain members of staff, and the other is a 'request' form.  What I would like to be able to do, is the date checked (time/date InfoPath field) on the request form to populate the check date (time/date InfoPath field) on the Personal Details list.

 I have tried all sorts of rules/data connections but don't seem to be able to get the one field to update the other.

 I hope the above makes sense, and if anyone could help I'd be really grateful.

 I think this may be a place where workflow would be helpful - have you looked into that for an option?

 I have looked and tried workflow but couldn't make this work, I'm guessing that I would need to identify the corresponding staff name on the other list first in order to update the date field relevant to that person's record.  I think I may have tried to many options and got myself tied up in knots, if you have anything that might help I would be really grateful.
