NEWBIE! Auto numbering for each person on a form

Weird question i know, but my customer wants me to see if it's possible that a refrence number is created for each person who comes in to submit a form? IS THIS POSSIBLE??

    Hi Shamisty,

Yes, you can do this. Do you want to make the number unique per form or per site/per library?  If it's unique per form, it's easy. Just add a rule in your form that creates the number before submitting the form. You can use Concat function to create a REF ID in any desired format. If it's per library or site, you'll have to do a double submit. Submit first and then query to get the ID and use it with concat to create a REF ID and then submit again with that value in the field (make sure overwrite ok is checked).

There are lots of posts on this technique. Search for Unique IDs or something like that.

    Good luck

Re: NEWBIE! Auto numbering for each person on a form

Hey thanks! So I found this: create your recieve data from the manage data connections from sharepoint library chose my url and library, then ID will be checked and so on..... Then go to: fx > insert function > max > choose my other Reference number (secondary) then data fields ID and then add a +1, do not refresh value when formula is recalculated. Change to read only and done (until you get to the final steps). My next question is... How do I make specific to what I want, such as... We have 6 Health instutions and people from each of those institutions will be submitting forms that go to their specific library. How do I make the reference number unique to them? I'll give you a couple of Health Institutions. UT Medical Branch (UTMB) UT Southwestern Medical Center My customer wants me to do it like this for these 2 examples: MB1 or SW1 and so on. Will this be digging me further into code? I don't have a lot of time to do this, 1 week (5 working days) to be exact. THANK YOU!!
