    Check Box Question

I am new to the forum and InfoPath, so please have patience with me.  I have created a form with check boxes.  However, I only want the person to click on one check box.  How do I do this so that if they check one of the boxes, they cannot check the others.  OR, if they check a second box, it unchecks the previous box, letting them only check one?  I do not know the language of InfoPath.  I took a form that was in excel and converted it in InfoPath, so it was just a matter of renaming the fields and moving columns and rows.  Since this is my first form, can someone explain, once I have check the 4 boxes, how to set it so that they can only click on the appropriate response?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  BTW..Im a secretary and not a computer whiz. :-)

    Hi-

It sounds like a checkbox is the incorrect control, perhaps? What about using an Option button? With an Option button, you can give the user 4 options and they choose one.

With a checkbox, each one is independent from the others, each one being true or false.

You could use rules to uncheck other checkboxes if one checkbox is checked. Then you'd also need to add validation. But this sounds like a lot of work.

If you absolutely need four separate true/false checkboxes, let me know. But do try an Option button to see if it addresses your form's need.

If a option button will work, then I can use that as only one answer is allowed.  How do I do an option button so that it unchecks other options when chosen?  I tried placing an option button, but it gave two buttons and I am only needing one per line.  I guess I don't know how to do an option button either.  I can't find anything that tells me how to do an option button.  Can you explain how to insert an option button?  I should add that this is for firefighters to choose whether their overtime was for the following four choices:

Called In, Held Over, Multi Alarm or Other.  How do I set them up to only allow one button to be chosen?

    Thank you sooo much!

You can right click the field in the data source that you want the option bound to and select Option Button for the control. Then enter "4" for the number of options you need. By default, the control will only allow one to be chosen if all are bound to the same field. You could also just select the control from the controls tool box, and again enter "4". You can move the buttons around on the form to where you need them (drag & drop or cut & paste) after you have them correctly bound to the same field.

Here's an Office Online page that might help you.

Thank you soooo Much!  It worked.  Moving the buttons around was very helpful.  I didn't know I could do that!

    I love this site!!!
