I need to have a button on my form which deletes the current list item. Is this possible?

IMO, Infopath forms are XML-based. That is, it is just XML data for rendering a form at runtime by external services, for ex., by Sharepoint services. 

Now, how would these XML data possibly know what is current list item and in which context and by which services? 
In other words, it is not domain of Infopath form to provide this. You should make it externally and only can invoke it from IP form.

 When you open a Sharepoint item in a browser, Sharepoint services already have for this item on ribbon "Delete" button.   

Correct me whenere I am wrong.

 I have seen examples on youtube of people deleting list items using a form, but with no directions on how this is accomplished. Each list item has a unique ID which the infopath form can read, I thought I'd be able to use that to delete the specific item.

 If it can't work then it doesn't matter, it just would make it more user friendly for the staff.
