Hello,

 I am very frustrated because I keep getting the an errror message when I try to enter the location of the Web Service that I want users to submit my form to.  I can find the list of Web Services provided by my SharePoint site, however, when I enter it I always get the following error:

 "Infopath cannot find or cannot access the specified Web service description" details are:

"The file is not a valid XML file. The file is not a valid XML document. A document must contain exactly one root element. Line 1, Position 0".

 Please help me understand what is occuring.  Is it possible my SharePoint does not support Web services?  I am very new to this and would greatly appreciate any help.

What do you mean? Do you mean that in the data connection wizard, you can enter the URL for the web service, and then see the methods in the next dialog, but you get the error when you try to select the method?

Thanks for your response.  Yes I do mean the data connection wizard.  I am using the following URL  http://myxxxxx3.teams.xxxxx.com/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?WSDL.  I anm trying to use the UpdateListItems WebService you have listed in your work instruction.  However, I cannot get passed entering the URL in the 3rd step of the adding a submit data connection in the data connection wizard as I get the error mentioned above.  Therefore, I never get to see the methods in the next dialog box. 

Also worth metioning that I just clicked on the UpdateListItems Web Service and copied that URL http://myxxxxx3.teams.xxxxx.com/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?op=UpdateListItems into the data connection wizrd and got a new error:

 "The file is not a valid XML file.
The form contains XML that cannot be parsed:
A string literal was expected, but no opening quote character was found.

 I am not sure if this helps or not.

You won't be able to include the method in the URL. It has to be selected from the next dialog in the data connection wizard.

Can you confirm that you are selecting a Submit data connection, and then selecting Web Service?

Can you try connecting to a different SharePoint web service, just to test?

Do you have another SharePoint server you can test with? See if IP will connect with one and not the other?

I see a similar error in a comment at the bottom of this blog post, but no resolution offered there.

I am choosing a Submit Data Connection and then selecting Web Service.  I cannot choose another Web Service to test becuase I cannt get to the next field in the data connection setup.  I simply error out at the URL stage.  I am thinking that something is wrong with my Web Service set-up. Uggh, I was hoping taht qRules was the answer but I cannot even get passed my own SP site to even try it. :(  I really appreciate you looking into this Hilary.  I will reach out to my SP administrator to see what the deal is.

You may be confused as to what I was asking - I was not asking that you try another web service method (which is what UpdateListItems is) but another web service, just to see if it was the lists web service or a different one.

You could try the copy service, for example.

http://site/_vti_bin/copy.asmx

May at least give your admin something to work with - you'd know if you couldn't create a connection to just the Lists web service, or any of the ShP web services.
