SharePoint Library and opening forms in Designer

We are soley using a SharePoint 2010 document library to house our master templates.  The problem is we can't open the form from SharePoint in InfoPath designer when we need to edit.  It opens instead with Filler.  How do we get around this problem?

When we opened the library in explorer view we can manually select Designer to open the form but it seems to be opening a temporary copy of the form and not the actual form.  The header at the top states Form1 which is a generic name instead of the actual form name.  When we save it gives us a dialog box on where to save the form which to me is more evidence that it is temporary file instead of the form stored on SharePoint.

We have tried the Document Library and a Form Library with the same result.  HELP!

I don't think it's a problem - I think it's by design. You don't want to make changes directly on the published form.

What I would recommend is that:

    1. You create a shared folder somewhere on your network

    2. Store the XSNs there

    3. When a change is needed, make sure to version your XSNs. So, for example, you might have

    ExpenseReport-11-06-2011.xsn

    ExpenseReport-12-22-2011.xsn

    ExpenseReport-02-02-2012.xsn

    4. Save the modified form.

    5. Publish the modified form.

    6. Test your changes to the XSN

    7. If something goes wrong, you open the previous known working version in Design mode and republish it.

    Good luck!

Those forms are only master copies and aren't meant to be published templates. We can publish fine and the inherit versioning is there.
