Would having a secondary data source (which in this case is a SharePoint list ) that has a lookup column with another list SharePoint list a bad idea? Is it feasible to do so? Would this slow the performance of my InfoPath form as it will e pulling data from a list that is also pulling data from another list via a lookup column?

This seems like a perfectly good use of a secondary data source.  You will only start running into performance issues if your lookup list starts running into the thousands of items.  And if you need to support that much data in your lookup, you can mitigate any performance issues with filters.
