How to create a summary of other fields in a list or table format that auto numbers it's self?

    Hi There

This is my first post at InfoPath dev as I have always been able to find the answers to my questions.

However, this one eludes me... I am not sure what is the best way to do this, any help , guidance or ideas are greatly appreciated it!

     Background information:

    • MOSS 2007
    • InfoPath 2007
    • Web Based Form
    • No Code allowed

The form I am currently working on has several views and a bunch of fields, data sources, etc.

One view of the form asks the user some questions, (yes/no) reply.

If they answer the questions with yes, then another field appears asking them for their input.

    There are 4 main questions.

The first question only has one reply (dropdown list).

The second question has a possibility of three different replies (options button), based on these three replies, the user can insert more than one item from a repeating table, one dropdown list, insert more than one item from another repeating table.

The third question has a possibility of three different replies (options button), based on these three replies, the user can choose one item from two drop down lists, or one, two, or three items from three dropdown lists.

The fourth question has a possibility of three different replies (options button), based on these three replies, the user can type in a rich text box, select can item from a dropdown list and type in a rich text box.

So in other words.. it looks like something like this:

    1. Would you like to set a career path goal? Yes / No

If yes (dropdown box appears with a connection to a SharePoint list)

    2. Would you like to set a management system goal? Yes/No

If yes, another section appears with another question

Would you like to : Advance, Change , Combination (advance, change)

If they select Advance another section appears with a repeating table with a connection to a SharePoint list

If they select Change another section appears with a dropdown list with a connection to a SharePoint list and a repeating table with a connection to a SharePoint list

if they select Combination, both sections above appear ( two repeating tables appears, and the dropdown list)

    3. Would you like to set professional goals? Yes /No

If yes, another section appears with another set of questions

Would you like to: Advance , Change, Combination (advance, change)

If they select Advance another section appears with two dropdown lists connected to a SharePoint list

If they select Change another section appears with three dropdown lists connected to a SharePoint list

If they select Combination , both sections appear ( five dropdown lists connected to a SharePoint list)

    4. Would you like to set job related goals? Yes/No

If yes, another section appears with another set of questions

Would you like to : Advance, Change, Combination (advance, change)

If they select Advance, another section appears with a rich text box

If they select Change, a dropdown list connected to a SharePoint list appears, and a rich text box appears

If they select Combination, both sections appear (rich text box, dropdown list, rich text box)

The question then is .. is it even possible to create a list/ table that summarizes the inputs above without writing any code?

In my head.. I see a repeating table (based whether or not a question above was answered) that had the following:

Goal ID (Auto generating Number)             Goal Type (If question one was answered, then I would see the dropdown list item selected)

    For example ...

For question #1 - Would you like to set a career path goal? Yes or No and I selected Yes , and selected "Project manager"

For question #2 - Would you like to set management system goals? Yes or No , and I selected Yes, and selected Change , and selected two items from a dropdown list "auditor", "accountant"

For question #3 - Would you like to set Professional Goals? Yes or No, and I selected No

For question #4 - Would you like to set Job Related Goals? Yes or No, and I selected yes, and selected Combination, and in the rich text box I typed  " I would like to set Job Related Goals.... " , selected an item from the dropdown list " System Engineer", and in the rich text box I typed " System engineers are crazy..."

In the summary I would see the following

    Goal ID                               Goal Type

    #1                                     Project Manager

    #2                                       Auditor, Accountant

#3                                      I would like to set job related goals... systems engineer, systems engineers are crazy......

And if I decided later on to have answer question #3... to yes.. then it would be part of the summary...

My first thought was to create a repeating table and the goal type field to insert a function that included concat, but I didn't know how to tell the repeating table to look at the other fields.. I guess I am having trouble coming up with the formula.. but again.. I am not sure if a repeating table is the best way to go...

Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

You can format the field values directly into the view of the form, much like you do when you have the questions text and provide a field for the user to fill in, you instead have the summary text with the values of the field placed accordingly in the layout.

This doesn't require you to have extra fields or data structure to present the information to the user.

If you need to hide components of the summary then make judicious use of conditional formatting on sections. I like to have a 'group' in my data source called 'formatGroup' which just sits at the bottom empty of fields - I can usually put my layout and fields inside of a section bound to this group without ill effect and can use the group multiple times on multiple sections. Each section, whilst being bound to the same group/node can still have unique conditional formatting.

    Skarn -

Thank You for the quick reply. I was thinking about doing something similar..

I wonder how much easier it would be if code was allowed?

     Do you know?

    Thanks
