Forms Library with attached InfoPath template (full client)

User opens the form by click the default item link

Form opens (by default) in read only mode
Is it possible to change the default action for a forms library to be e.g. "Edit in Microsoft Infopath"
Alternatively... Would it possible to set up a facility in the infopath form that allows to execute a check out (through a button or check box) after the form has been opened as read only initially?
Any thoughts are appreciated...
