    SQL permissions

We have installed DBXL with a separate web server and database server. The database pieces were installed using a sql account with sa privileges. The dba disabled the sa level account and wants us to use a different account with less permissions. But disabling that account also broke DAT, with an error message that the account was disabled, which of course it was. There are 2 connection strings in the web.config, one in appSettings and one in the DBXL section, both of which are encrypted. Do those include the settings for the account that was used during the installation and do we need to change those to reflect using the other account or do we need to do something else to change the account? Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

The encrypted strings are the connection strings, so your hunch is correct. I have forwarded your question to our internal support alias and hopefully someone will respond in the next day or so. The simplest solution may be to uninstall and reinstall, but let's see if one of our tech staff have a better alternative first. Thanks for your patience over this Thanksgiving holiday.

More info from our Support team:

Please try to reinstall using the account that will be used. The installer should encrypt the credentials and store them in web.config and there’s no way to do that manually (hence the re-install).

Talked with support.  We don't know of a standalone tool for encrypting the connections strings and we don't recommend putting it in plain text because password is exposed. However, plain text may a simple workaround or now. Of course, the other option would be to re-install.

We're going to try plain text as a workaround for now. Are there any plans to provide a utility to do the encryption/decryption of the strings? That would be pretty useful for a large organization that needs to change the passwords due to turnover and the like. Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

Jimmy is investigating a tool that may help you. He'll send you e-mail after he verifies it is working.
