Insert data into MS access using master/detail structure

    Hi,

I have been self learning infopath from a couple of months. lately i discovered about the master/detail functionality. Can anyone direct me to a material which tells about how to insert data to MS access through infopath master detail structure.

For example, i need to design a form template which will have the following structure:

Master ( a MS access table):

    Name, age

    Detail (a MS access table):

    Name, Company, Designation

Name is the key which relates the two tables.

My requirement is to  develop a new form template to insert one row into the master table whereas i can store 'N' number of rows into the detail table.

Any guidance / direction would be quire helpful.

    Thanks.

    Thanks,
    Kiran

    Hi:

First you need to create your tables in Access. Then, create a new InfoPath form and base it off your database. You'll need to connect your table when you select them for your form. So, first you'll select your 'master' table, then, with that table selected in the tree in the window for selecting tables, you'll click the button that allows you to add a table. At that point you can select your 'detail' table. InfoPath will probably link them correctly on the Name field, but you'll want to verify that.

Then, from the dataFields folder in the data source, you can actually just drag the group for the 'master' table onto the form. InfoPath will ask what type of control you want, and one option you'll be provided (if your table are set up correctly) is master / detail.

Re: Insert data into MS access using master/detail structure

    Thanks for the kickstart Hilary.

I tried to do as you guided. The table selection is good and i am able to drag the tree structure into the form as a master/detail control. But the problem is since the detail table is dependent on the master, when i drag and drop the structure, i get the detail fields also onto the master section. Sorry if i am too vague here.

Also if i have to insert the data into the access tables through the master / detail structure, where should the submit button be positioned ? is it that the button, the master section and the detail section - all of them must be inside a section ?

    Thanks...

    Thanks,
    Kiran

And what happens if you drag the details section outside of the master section? The Submit button can be wherever you like -- It will submit any information that has been entered into the data fields.
