    Multi selection list box

I am having no success in working out how to use the multi selection list box in a database form.

    I keep getting the error

"A multiple-selection list box control must be bound to a repeating field with a text data type"

In the form the user is entering details of a new book and can select many categories to which the book might belong

eg non fiction, fantasy, cooking, fishing, etc

the category descriptions are stored in a database in a lookup table

Also there is a table which stores which categories a book has -

So we have tlbBook, tblCategories and tblCategory description.

    In my current attempt

Main data connection gets the detail of the book

    I made two secondary connections

    1. to pull out the descriptions of the categories

    2. to pull the list of categories assigned to a particular book,

    Result is the error above

In my first attempt I tried to include the values in tblCategories in the main data connection but the query fields showed as non repeating (though showed as repeating in the data fields) . This did not work - the same error as mentioned previously

I have tried various different permutations and combinations, but nothing works

Are you binding it to the repeating group (the row) as opposed to the element itself?

If you can show a screenshot of the properties of the list box when it's setup, then that would be great.

    Re: Multi selection list box

I have tried binding it to just about anything, an element, a group, anything, whatever I click on in the box to bind it produces the same error message.

I think I am missing something very basic about how to use this control I have a one to many relationship in an exceptionally basic database design and cannot get it to play ball.

Should I be attempting to bind it to the main data connection or to a secondary connection?

Is there dowloadable example that someone can point me to?

I should say that this is the first application I have attempted to develop in Infopath, though have been in software development for over a decade.

Here are the basic steps, and I just verified them quickly with a SharePoint list as my data connection:

    - Create data connection to data source (secondary data connection) - MSLB1.png

    - Drag Multi-Select List Box onto canvas (rich client only - not supported in browser forms)

    - Double-click MSLB to get to properties

    - For Data Source, choose the data connection from step 1

    - For the Entries field, click the button and choose the repeating group that corresponds to the row of data in the data source - MSLB2.png

    - Select a value and display name for that data source by selecting nodes within the repeating group (can be the same or different)

    - Preview the form - MSLB3.png

    Re: Multi selection list box

It is believed that browser enabled InfoPath forms do not support multiple selection list box.

But there is a work around for this.

I have posted a step-by-step approach along with the source code to make multiple selection list box a possibility with browser enabled InfoPath forms.

I'm having the same problem. Were you able to get this to work correctly? Please provide solution.

    Thanks
