Setting the name of a field or column to the value of another field

I have a form that needs to do some calculations on one of 20 or so columns.  It determines what column it needs each time by comparing a date field on the form (then there needs to be 20 conditional statements to find it ie: date > 1-1-09 or < 1-30-09) .  There are several places on the form where I need to reference this column.  With out looking up the column each time and doing the 20 conditions, is there a way to look up this column once and set that column name to a variable of some sort and be able able to use that in formulas on the form?

you can set the value of a field to another field not the name of a field to another field. Changing the field name amounts to changing the schema of the form, which i dont think is possible
