Thanks Kaylan!
My problem was that since the original textbox was created from the main datasource queryfields, it wouldn't allow me to set the datatype. But I had another textbox referencing a custom field I created that did not strip off the zeroes on button click even though it has a text(string) format, so I deleted the queryfield bound textbox, copied and pasted my custom textbox into my first view, bound it to a new custom field, pointed my onclick code at it and, oila, it works great. So it seems to me that the proprietary "simpletype" data type is the culprit. If so, it's another example where the "out of the box" solution is anything but easy when it comes time to customize. :)
Cheers!
