I'm a newbie to Infopath and have been trying various ways to hide a repeating section when the form loads initially? When the user clicks the Insert link then the section should be added.How can I do that?

I have tred the conditional logic but that doesn't seem to help. I'm thinking I need to put some code in form load event but am not sure what it would be.

You can have the repeating section in an optional section. For optional section only link will be displayed.

Also, try playing around with the default values in Tools-->Default Values. If you deselect the section it won't show a blank one by default, but you will still get the Insert Link.

Adding an optional section for a repeating datatype was an issue. But once I dragged the repeating section(created separately) into the optional section, it seemed to work.

Later I settled for the approach suggested by PD, adding the repeating section and unchecking the type from tools > default Values.
