General question... "Application" or "Site Collection"

Hello,

every time if I want to create a new "SharePoint" application I have to decide if I create a "Web Application" or a "Site Collection" --- and I don´t know if I have always did it the "right" way. :-)

So my question is: Can anyone tell me what I have to look for if I have to decide of creating a new "Web Application" or a "Site Collection" in Sharepoint 2007.
