I am finishing up a project and cleaning up after myself, and part of the process is to delete unused fields - some created by InfoPath as I inserted some controls I later deleted, some created by me as I was trying different things.

When I go to Data Source and ask it to delete a field, however, I get an ominous message telling me that I will "affect any controls in your form that are bound to it". Well, most likely there are none of such, but who can be sure?

Is there any way to check whether a field or group is being used in the form, and to identify which control in which view is bound to it, or uses it in any way?

Hi,

You can do one thing to identify unused field in datsource.
Click the every control in the form in design mode, when we click on any control, corresponding field will highlight in the datasource. This way , you can find unused field.

Thanks, Ramana. That's a bit tedious, though. And it won't tell me if, as in this case, I am using a field to keep dropdown list values, or to save auxiliary data without showing it on the form or binding it to a control.

Is there a place, say in one of the form files, where I can find all the fields I am using? I just don't want to miss one, since deleting it would really mess my form, and there is no Undo for field deletion...

I thinky what Kalyan is suggesting is the only way to do it in the designer. However, if you want to go about it the "advanced" way you could extract the form files, and then perform a Search in Files opertion using your favorite text editor. You will find the field in the XSD files, of course, but if you don't find them referenced by any XSL then it is likely that you are not using them. There is always the chance, however, that you have code or rules that use the field without referencing them on the view and you would want to watch out for these scenarios.

If all else fails, you could just start over, adding only the ndoes that you need.
