Unable to effectively publish changes to "Limit text box to" x characters

I have a form that originally had a name field limited to 40 characters.  I have a request to change this to 35 characters.  When I open the form in design mode, the "Limit text box to" check box is unchecked.

If I change this to checked, add 35 characters and preview the form, it still allows 40 characters.  However, if I open the properties back up, it still shows 35 characters.

If I change this to checked, add 35 characters and publish the form, it still allows 40 characters.  However, if I open the form in design mode again, it shows this as unchecked.

I have been able to open the manifest.xsf and change the maximum length to 35 characters successfully.  However, this causes me concern from a longer term support perspective that if someone opens the properties box, they don't see any restriction on this field.

     I am using Infopath 2003 SP2.

     Any ideas??

I have never seen this behavior before. You might want to try designing this template on another box with InfoPath to see if you get the same behavior. I suspect that it is this particular installation of InfoPath that has the issue. That being the case, an Office Repair or a reinstallation of Office or InfoPath might be in order. If this occurs on a second machine, then let us know and we can pass that info on to Microsoft.

I've tried this on multiple machines.  It appears to be form specific.  I can go in and modify it in the backend just concerned about what else may be "corrupted"

Ocassionally a form can become corrupted. And it's often impossible to track down why. Its good to keep occasional backups as you develop, or use a source control system.

You might be able to, if it's not an overly complex form, rebuild it and then compare all the template source files to see what is different.
