Color shading in a table will not print

I don't know if this is a common issue or not, as I did not find anything in the forums here, but it seems a bit strange to me.  I am designing a large form in InfoPath 2007 and I am printing views as I go along to ensure they come out correctly.  I have a cell that I applied some shading to, and when I print it no colors show up in that cell.  All other colors show up in the form, even the same color applied to a font.

Has anyone heard of this before, and a possible cause?  Thanks in advance

InfoPath relies on some Internet Explorer settings. IE has a setting in the print options that is off by default which determines whether to print background shades and background images. Turn that on, and you'll get it in IP too.

NOTE: This is a per-user setting, meaning that each user will need to turn it on if they care to have the background shades/images printed.

     Thanks Greg!

While looking around in IE, I also decided to look more in InfoPath.  There is a setting in both Designer and "Fill out a Form" modes located in TOOLS >> Options.  Under the General Tab, click on "Print Background Colors and Pictures"

Hope this helps anyone else looking too!

I do recall seeing that in there. Either entry point will change the same system setting.

Thanks for writing back on this!

Actually, both settings seem to be completely independent (at least for infopath 2003 and internet explorer 7).

    Which is a good thing!

What brings me to the next question : Is it possible to deploy this setting to all users of an organization via policies?
Does anybody know where this option is stored? Registry, maybe?

    Hi Axel,

If you are looking to promote this property to users of an InfoPath form, you can "force" the setting when they open a form.  This is available by going to Tools>>Options>>[General Tab under System] Internet Options>>[Advanced Tab], then scroll down to the Printing properties section, and check "Print background colors and images".

I know you mentioned trying to do this with policies, but I thought this might be helpful if you are using InfoPath.

    Hi, Patrick,

thank you, but actually this only changes my personal setting for internet explorer.  I don't think this forces a setting to anybody else.

And again: The internet explorer setting you mention and the InfoPath-Setting tools/options/general/print-background-color are not the same.

Which is, again, a good thing:
I want to have all InfoPath-Forms printed with background colors ON.
But I don't want to feed all Internet Explorer Users in my company a new IE-setting!

    Cheers

Oh I see, you don't want to change the IE setting, but only in IP?  I believe then, when you are designing the form in IP, you can just use the check box in Tools>>Options[General Tab] "Print background colors and pictures".

I just tested it in IP 2007 and IE 7 and it doesn't affect IE settings, only when in IP.  This setting should only be relevant when filling out a form in IP.

I hope that's what you are looking for.  I hope I didn't misunderstand you.

    Cheers

    Thanks for answering!

Actually, Tools/Options is for configuring the application as a whole, as opposed to Tools/Form/Options, which sets options for the form you are currently designing. So, Tools/Options will only affect your own configuration on the pc you're currently using.

Meanwhile, I found the registry setting I was searching for:

    • Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\InfoPath\Internet Explorer\Main.
    • ValueName: "Print_Background".
    • Possible Values: "yes" and "no".

This setting is easily deployable via policies. Sorry for answering my own questions :)

This registry-setting only works for InfoPath 2003. Can anybody verify the correspondent setting for InfoPath 2007?

    Cheers

it will work only if you select it in IE to print background colors and images. Will people know to do that when they print it out, probably not. I wish there was a better way to just have it follow the form to the web form!!

Thank you! We had this problem with Server 2012 + IE 10 + Muhimbi PDF conversion - we just had to re-locate the setting in IE 10 which is now in Page Setup. As Muhimbi runs as our Farm Account, we had to set the Farm Account's Registry setting (in preference to logging-in as this acocunt): Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_USERS\[SID]\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup] "header"="&w&bPage &p of &P" "footer"="&u&b&d" "margin_bottom"="0.750000" "margin_left"="0.750000" "margin_right"="0.750000" "margin_top"="0.750000" "Print_Background"="yes" [
