Drop down list of users in company

I may be using the wrong key words to find what I am looking for but I cannot find the answer to this and I can't imagine I am the only one looking for this.

I'm looking for a way to retrieve a list of the companies users or a lookup field like sharepoint has for people in a custom list form. Is this even possible in browser forms?

You can use an Active Directory Web Service to query that data to identify your users and lookup data on them such as phone, email, dept, location, manager, etc. This works with both browser and client based forms without any code or anything.

There is a contact selector for 2007 but I am not sure it is browser compatible.

You can get some limited information from SharePoint that is available.

I have not checked on the contact selector, but I will. The web service I had issues with filtering in browser enabled and it only brought back my own profile information. I used the following blogs for reference.

Do you know how to retieve every id and not just my own?

I believe Contact Selector is the control that would explain to your needs.

Please Check out this link :

I am sure the above discussed control is "BROWSERT ENABLED".

    Thanks & Regards,

That got me so much closer. The thing I am having an issue with is the same as some of the others that left comments. After selecting a name the field goes blank. The XML must be right, because I am able to look up users. I did notice that when I added the "Contact Selector" it creates group and not a text string. Not sure if that matters.  If anyone has got this to work please let me know what I am doing wrong. I followed the steps in the blog.

         Thanks

I think I may have got it. I right clicked on the control and had to bind it to the "MyGroup" group and it seems to be working so far. Thanks for the help Srikrushna and Clay.

    Hello,

Can you point me to instructions on how to query AD? I have only seen instructions on how to get AD information on the current user. I want to query the AD for a list of names.

    Thank you.

    Hi John.

Our Active Directory Web Service has both the ability to identify the current user and return their information but also the ability to pass another userID and query their data.

If you want to browse a list of users then you would probably need to look at a seperate list or the contact selector for 2007.

Re: Drop down list of users in company

As a novice and not really a developer, I have managed to get the ActiveX Contact Selected to work, BUT, I am not sure how to get the selected user detail to display?

For example, after I select the user from the Contact Select and click on ADD, I would like the users department, title and telephone number to display in the view? I just have no idea where to start

Anyone able to help me out

    Michael

I have 2 contact selectors on my form and both are working.  I would also like to have text boxes bound to fields from the contact selector.  If I bind a text box to the DisplayName, the name shows up when a user is entered.  It has also worked for the AccountType.  But if I create another field within the contact selector such as Division or Title, it returns nothing.  I not sure if there is something I may be missing or if I need to call the value something else for it to see what data to pull from AD.

Here is example how to retrieve email. You can get any other field(s) using the same approach. Just don't use Contact selector as a trigger for your actions in browser enabled forms.

I followed your blog instructions to the letter except for this part, I can not find what you are referring to -- "In data source pane choose main data source. Double click at replyToControl group".  Where is the replyToControl?

I need the Company and Telephone fields from AD, not necessarily the email, if you can provide that assistance as well.  Your blog explains how to perform the 2 things I need most right now.  Pulling other AD info and the ability to use one of these contact selectors to determine who the receives the form in workflow.

     Thanks for your help.

It's the name I gave to the Contact Selector group. You can use your own instead.

The phone info is one of the getuserprofilebyname service fields. You can check available fields of that webservice by temporary creating repeating section bound to the secondary source on your layout.

getuserprofilebyname was used as an example and it doesnt have complete set of user properties available. The ultimate info about sharepoint user is posible to get by adding UserInfo list as a secondary data source.

Still can't get it to work.  If I have a gpContactSelector with the 3 strings (DisplayName, AccountID, AccountType), can I add a string here called Email?

Can you help me go through step-by-step?

Yes you can. But Contact Selector wont populate it for you unless you going to use the workaround at the end of the article to populate repeating structures.

I don't think I could do it better then it already done in my blog
