    QDABRA Install with SQL Express

    Hi

I installed this once before with a full version of SQL and all was fine because obviously I knew the passwords and DB settings for SQL.
Now I'm looking to test it on a proper webserver, I want to keep all applications default, so I installed Sharepoint services with the bundled SQL Express - trouble is I can't get into SQL express because it's all sealed up - so what are the default settings for QDABRA? I can't seem to get the installation to communicate with SQL.

    Thanks

    Bob

    Hi Bob.

As part of the install, two new databases will be created in SQL Express.

You must be using an account that has SysAdmin permissions or at least permisison to create new databases in SQL when running the install.  The install also will need to assign permisisons to the Network Services account to be able to access the databases from the web services.

With SQL Express you will need to replace (local) with your machine name\SQLEXPRESS as this is the default instance name for SQL Express.  You can do the test connection on the Database Enumeration tab to verify.

If you need additional assistance email me and I can help you out.

Yes, I saw that information in another post and I tried that but failed because I was thinking "local" was a term SQL often uses - replacing with the server name works, but now I'm failing with the dbase enumerator, because I don't know the default dbase

The default database is not required and can be left blank.  The database is a parameter in the query itself so it can be set dynamically.

Are you getting an additional error?  You can go to the Event Viewer and see any Qdabra errors. Please email me the text to help troubleshooting.

Ok this is a SQL setup.

Under Configuration tools go to surface area configuration

Then Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections

In the tree view under Database Engine select Remote connections

    Select to use both.

This will allow the connectivity you need.

If that's an SQL setting, I can't get in there becase I don't know the password - it just installed without asking the normal polite questions.

    Sorry.

From the server go to start and all programs and that is where the SQL Surface AreaConfiguration program is.  You should not need to connect to a database for this.

    Clay,

That's my point: There is no configuration avaiable anywhere - I'll investigate Microsoft's site.

OK, I just found out that the SQL Express setup can be opend using Windows security and the following server name: \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query
    yes that really works!

Re: QDABRA Install with SQL Express

SQLExpress is different than SQL 2005.

I know lots of people have used it successfully but I do not have a box that is using it at the moment.

Also since it came bundled you probably do not get all of the options.

Here is a guide to setting up remote TCP connections without using the surface area configuration. http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx

Worst case you may need to install another instance of SQLExpress which will include the tools needed to configure it yourself.

    Having wdaed through this http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29019401/-using-sql-express-wit.aspx

I think I may just upgrade to Full blown SQL - there are no tools available in the embedded version.

    Hi Bob,

You should be able to access your SQL Server Express settings with this:

    SQL Management Studio Express

You probably need to give SQL Server admin permissions to the ASPNET account.

Re: QDABRA Install with SQL Express

    jrishe

thanks - yeah I tried that and I still couldn't figure it out. So this is what I did:
You would bet against it but Microsoft have a solution to upgrade from SQL express 2005 to sql .............2000! Which sound like a backward step but I have this full version so I tried it and it wouldn't give me the option to upgrade.
Next I tried installing SQL2k with 2005 express still installed - and the full version installed then just disappeared - very strange but true?
Finally I tried backing up my Sharepoint site and then uninstalling SharePoint - thus uninstalling express 2005, then installing SQL2k and downloading the latest SharePoint services 3.0 with the latest service pack.
Perfect - Sharepoint installed like a dream and better than that my SharePoint site was completely intact without using the backup. So I don't quite understand how that all pans out (I would have thought uninstalling would have wiped out my site?) but now I have SQL 2K with Sharepoint and my data, ready for the next challenge - "importing" another site from a different server - but that’s for another post!
