Visual Studio Tools for Applications and Visual Studio Express 2005

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can install Visual Studio Tools for Applications on top of my Visual Studio Express 2005?  I want to be able to program a validation event, but it says I need to install this.  Also do I need to install XML Core Services 6.0 too?

Is this anything else I am missing to be able to add code to the Validation Event of a drop down?  Thanks, Stephanie

Visual Studio Tools for Applications (aka VSTA) is a separate product and it's not part of Visual Studio. It installs as part of InfoPath 2007, please go to add/remove programs and make sure InfoPath 2007 is fully installed.

I went into change programs and clicked on Run all from my computer for the .Net section.  It says that it successful updated the configuration.  But, when I try to click on Validation Event from inside Infopath on a drop down list it gives me a pop up saying, "Infopath cannot add the event handler.  Infopath cannot create the Visual Basic or C# project.  The location for the Visual Basic or C # project cannot be found or accessed.

I do have the browser functionality turned on for my form, does that make a difference?  I want this form to display in a browser.

    Any ideas?

     Thanks, Stephanie

    Check these two locations:

Tools | Options, Design Tab, check the "Project location for Visual Basic and C# code"

Tools | Form Options, Programming category, check the "Project location for Visual Basic and C# code"

If these paths do not exist or are inaccessible (such as permissions issues) you will not be able to add code to your solution. In that case, make sure to change these paths to existing locations of your choice.

The paths are all there and look to be accessable.  I was able to save a template to that area.  But, I still get the same message when trying to add something to that event.

Any other ideas!  Thanks for the help!  Stephanie

Does the form already have code? It's easy to check - if "remove code" button is enabled in the Programming section of Form Options then you have code in your solution. You will need the original code solution to be able to add/modify code. If you don't have access to the original solution then your only option is to "remove code" at which point you'll lose all existing code :)

I am not sure what may be wrong if you do not have actually have code :)

Thanks for trying to help! The remove code button is not clickable, but this is a new form which I have created from scratch, so there shouldn't be any code in it.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong either.

    Thanks, Stephanie

I am assuming you are using InfoPath 2007 (if it's 2003 everything I've said so far didn't make sense anyway :)). A few extra options:

    - Make sure you have Office 2007 SP1 installed, this solves a lot of issues

    - If you already have it or it does not work, try to do Repair or Reinstall

If these don't work, I'm at the end of my wits :)

I was having the same issue.  I simply changed the programming area of "form options" to use C# as the code language.  The error went away after that.
