    There is a macro called IPFullTrust that allows you to test your form without having to install it on your computer. This at least resolves the short term problem of making changes and testing it. I will have to get Regform to work for the long term.

    Thanks again!

    I'm now receiving the following error

    No mapping between account names and security IDs was done

    The command that is producing the error is
    objUser = GetObject("LDAP://" + objADSystemInfo.UserName)

    Thanks

    Here is the code that worked for me...

    Sub GetADUserInfo(ByVal user As String)

    Dim idx1 As Integer
    Dim idx2 As Integer

    Dim searcher As New DirectorySearcher()

    searcher.SearchRoot = New DirectoryEntry(domainADsPath, username, password)
    searcher.Filter = "(sAMAccountName=" + user + ")"
    searcher.SearchScope = SearchScope.Subtree

    searcher.PropertiesToLoad.AddRange(New String() {"displayName", "department", "mail" })

    Dim result As SearchResult

    result = searcher.FindOne()

    If Not (result Is Nothing) Then
    Dim adCol As ICollection
    Dim en As IEnumerator

    adCol = result.Properties.Item("displayName")
    en = adCol.GetEnumerator

    While en.MoveNext
    thisXDocument.DOM.selectSingleNode("//my:Name").text = en.Current
    End While

    adCol = result.Properties.Item("department")
    en = adCol.GetEnumerator

    While en.MoveNext
    thisXDocument.DOM.selectSingleNode("//my:Department").text = en.Current
    End While

    adCol = result.Properties.Item("mail")
    en = adCol.GetEnumerator

    While en.MoveNext
    thisXDocument.DOM.selectSingleNode("//my:EmailAddress").text = en.Current
    End While

    Hi Gary,
    You know, you should just buy our AD Web service, then you don't have to write any code and you don't have to be Full Trust. It's only $20. I'm sure it's worth it by now... :)

    Patrick,

    The problem is I know nothing about web services, how to install them or use them. The amount of reference information at my disposal is VERY limited. I've gone to the local book stores and they didn't have any books on InfoPath. I have a couple of books being shipped and they should be here in a few days.

    I'm very interested in not having the form fully trusted. Does the web service need to be installed on every machine that is going to open the form? I am emailing the form to different people and they need to be able to open and modify the form.

    Thanks,

    Hi Vissu and welcome to our forum!
    Thanks for reopening this issue that I forgot to respond to. You can use our Database Accelerator Solution to do both of the steps you want. It installs on *one* server that has SQL running on it (and IIS for the web services). We have a new version coming out in a month. We can send you a free trial version to install and test. Please send me private e-mail if you are interested.

    Hi Patrick Halstead

    suppose user1,user2 r two rolls.
    can i get data from AD based on the user1 login user name,if we can then can u please tell me steps because i am totally new to this field.

    After getting data from AD user1 will fill some more fields and then he will close that infopath form.it will be saved in form library.
    Now one more doubt is

    can i add a context menu to send a mail in form library.

    if i send this infopath form as a link in through a mail which another user2 can open that link.when an user2 is oppened this link it should display user1 data

    can u please help me out from this,i am having only one day to complete this task.(please tell me in steps)

    Hi again,

    Using the AD Web Service you can definitely get login user name and store it in the main data source of the solution. With InfoPath 2007, you can also get the alias username without calling any webservice.

    Context menu in form library - you could do this but it's a lot of work to send e-mail that way (involves sending parameters to InfoPath or event handler in SharePoint). I would recommend that you put a button in the InfoPath form (and not use a context menu). That's easy.

    This is a free forum. We can point you in the right direction, but we don't have time to do your job. Let us know if you get stuck. Good luck!

    I would pay you $20 in a heartbeat for a solution that would retrieve the logged in user's SAM name, email address, and account id. The problem is we have a bureaucratic quagmire and I have no access to the servers to install a Web service. The only control I have is at my form level and what I can get "from" Sharepoint.

    I'm using InfoPath and WSS 2003. I really need what I think the initiator of this thread is seeking; i.e., a solution that retrieves the logged in user's login id, email address, and SAM name and assign them to associated fields. I'm trying to build a workflow, but have no knowledge of programming in InfoPath.

    P.S. I also subscribe to InformIT and readily read your book on Developing InfoPath Solutions.

    Hi Deb!

    Thanks for reading our book! :) What is InformIT? Should I subscribe to that?

    You can get the login alias in InfoPath 2007 using the built-in function. In InfoPath 2003 you can also get it using the Environment...Username solution described in chapter 2 of our book. Unfortunately, this doesn't work so well for extranetted users (users not on the corporate LAN). If you need to support that rarer scenario to get the logged in account name, i.e. you have extranet users, they have to join the domain and/or VPN in to your domain.

    For the e-mail alias, it may be possible to get this from Outlook. I'm not sure. In general, the mail envelope should have this but there could be security issues requiring full trust. I don't know, but try to Google for "programmatically get e-mail sender's address from Outlook".

    For SAM name - if you need the full user's name, you're going to have to access Active Directory on a Domain Controller (DC) and for that you'll need an LDAP string and some credentials. This will require code (same code as in our Web service) and you'll likely have to make it full trust to encrypt the credentials which you are accessing the DC to get the e-mail address.

    I understand your political quagmire situation but the Web service is really the way to go and this is what the InfoPath team also recommends.

    Another solution for forms-based workflow is to have the user either a) type in their name, or b) select their name from a dropdown. If the number of users is limited, this kind of workflow may do. You can list the user's alias and for assignment you can add open rules to your form to check the form's XML to ensure that the person that opens the form is the person's alias that appears inthe form's data and if not, you can switch to a read-only view, etc. Lots of options here. See the chapter in my book on forms based workflow.

    Patrick:

    Here is the link to InformIT. http://safari.informit.com/. It's a very cool service. For $19.95 I have full access to all the content in their library, which includes many of the major IT publishers. I have up to 10 books on my bookshelf at a time. I can bookmark, notate, and print. As an IT consultant and with the pace of change in our world, this is the only way to go to stay current.

    I will go get your book off my electronic bookshelf. ;-)

    Thanks!
