How to add SharePoint list item display button to autopopulate Infopath form?

Does anyone know how to add a custom button on a SharePoint list item display form to autopopulate an Infopath form when clicked on? For example,

     1) Display a SharePoint contact list item:

    Last Name: Smith
    First Name: John

    2) In the list item toolbar have a new button called something like "Apply"

    3) When clicking the button, the Infopath Form comes up in the browser with "Smith" and "John" already selected in the drop-downs.

I know how to link the SharePoint data so that I can select any list item from the drop-down but I'm unsure how to dynamically populate an Infopath browser form based on an individual SharePoint list item.

I've tried searching but have come up empty. Any pointers would appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi Gil.

If you want to just prepopulate a from when it is opened I believe it could be done.

Add an additional field to your list which is a check box or drop down.  The best case would be to deposit the username in a field as well so that multiple selections would not get confused. If the record is modified I believe this is captured automatically. I am not sure what your requirements are.

Then have a link to your template.  There is probably a way to combine them.

When your form opens have it load the list and find the selected record, possibly also which is modified by the same user and then use that to default the value for the user.

Then also update the list via a CAML and reset the flag value.

    Hope that Helps.
