Microsoft Office Infopath cannot open the selected view

I've seen some other posts on here that the error gives additional information or lists the file name etc..  but my error only says "Microsoft Office Infopath cannot open the selected view" and that's it.  No indication of what to look for to fix it.  I can open the form in preview and use it just fine but when I open in design mode it takes me to the secondary view.  When I try to switch to the default view it gives me the error??

Is there really no way that this can be fixed?  Did I just lose all of the changes that I made to my form today???  YIKES!

It sounds like their is a problem with your default view.  Do you have Infopath 2007? You could use the design checker.

Usually there is a details button on warning messages but I do not think I have encountered this specific problem before. There could also be a rule or something that is causing a problem too.  Have you deleted a view that might still be referenced?

Thanks for your response.  I am using Infopath 2003.  I guess there is no design checker on that version, eh?  Just my luck.

Yes, I can usually trouble shoot using the details button on the warnings but this one does not have a details button.  Just an OK so I have no way of even getting to the View 1.  It is still there because if I open the form to fill out I can fill it out just fine.  I just can't get to it in design view to finish it.  I only have 2 Views and there is no coding.  Just basic out of the box infopath using rules to do all of the work.  It feeds to an Access Database and it is not corrupt.

Currently I'm making all of my changes again one by one and publishing after each change so that I can find out if a certain change is doing it every time.  I had made all of the changes again yesterday and the same thing happened.  I was moving along just fine and then it just quit letting me get to the design view of the default view.  This is a HORRIBLE bug because if I didn't have an old version of the form I would have lost everything I've been working on for about the last 4 months!!

No IP 2003 does not have the design checker.

Which probably would not help. I thought the view was working in design mode but not in the form not the other way around.  If you cannot design the view then there is something broken there.  You could try exporting to source files. Closing and then designing the manifest file and see if that might correct things.

I have not seen this or heard of it before.

Hopefully it was just some random corruption.  I would not think that you could break a view with standard controls.

Wow, it just did it again but now the error shows the file path and then Cannot open the selected view....and neither View will open in design mode.  Opens just fine in Preview mode.  All I am doing is making certain sections of the form be visible or not based on the value of a check box!!

How do you export to source files and design the manifest file?

From the File menu in the toolbar you can select "Extract Form Files..." it is differnet in 2003 vs 2007.

Then you would close the form.

Go to the folder you extracted to.

Find the manifest and right click and select design.

Re: Microsoft Office Infopath cannot open the selected view

Thank you again.  I haven't tried to Extract the Form Files yet but here is what I have done.  I copied the default view into a new view as a back up and then modified the default view.  I've made all of the changes I was trying before and it only gave me the error once at which point I was able to set the back up view as the default view and continue on.  I just keep copying my changes into new views (and then deleting the old back up views) so that I can use the backup view as a recovery view if I loose the default view.  I know it's not a "real" solution but it's working for now.  What a headache!  If this fails on me, I'll try the Extract from Form Files route.

     Thank you again!!
