Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

I am to InfoPath and was following your instructions on the following...

     http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/matt/archive/2006/02/02/Add-SharePoint-List-Items-with-InfoPath.aspx

I ran into an error when trying to submit:

The SOAP response indicates that an error occurred on the server:

Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown.
<detail><errorstring xmlns="Element'>http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/soap/">Element <Batch> of parameter updates is missing or invalid.</errorstring></detail>

I don't know how to troubleshott this. I am not a developer by any means and was told by my company Help Desk that business users can configure forms to submit in as a new row in a Sharepoint list. However, they don't provide any technical support.

I have a form that I need to create that submits the information into a Sharepoint list (with other fields not in the form) for workflow tracking.

Would someone be able to assist me? Would be greatly appreciated.

I have InfoPath Designer 2003 and Sharepoint 2007.

    Hi there.

I would check you list ID and the site. I find the biggest issue people have is that they do not get the exact path to the site they want and therefore SharePoint cannot find the list.

I was following the instructions here:http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/matt/archive/2006/02/02/Add-SharePoint-List-Items-with-InfoPath.aspx

I was able to pull information from the Contacts list in Sharepoint into my form.

For the name field, I followed the example and went into the setting page for contact list and took the value after "List=" which is "%7B673F3A8B%2DD648%2D4A26%2DA164%2D80FE3FA7B506%7D" from http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/JLee/_layouts/listedit.aspx?List=%7B673F3A8B%2DD648%2D4A26%2DA164%2D80FE3FA7B506%7D

    I encoded it via a tool to change it to code with {}. This is what I ended up putting in the value field for the name: {673F3A8B-D648-4A26-A164-80FE3FA7B506}

On the step where it indicates to "Type the location of the lists.asmx file on your SharePoint site. This is usually located at http://sharepointserver/_vti_bin/lists.asmx.", I did the below...Or should it have been "http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?WSDL"? I tried both but got the same error.

Data connections for Submit is: http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/JLee/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?WSDL

    Operations: Update List item

What I do not know is where should I post the XML file (Add List Item Template.xml).

OK so your receive connection is pulling the information properly?

Why do you have to use a different method for obtaining the GUID? That is very critical to have it exact.

I am assuming you are using the sample CAML for the test.

Fo your location I believe it should be http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/JLee since this is the site where the list is located. I am assuming this is your own site you are using for testing. You could also try http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/ One of these would be your submit location. Since you are using team sites it would not be the standard lists location.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, I was able to see the information in the Contacts List appear in the InfoPath form.

Why do you have to use a different method for obtaining the GUID? -- I was following the instructions that was posted. I don't know enough about how to submit infopath form data into a Sharepoint list to know why I'm being asked to set it up a certain way. If there is an easier way to configure, please advise...I'm new to InfoPath.

Fo your location I believe it should be http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/JLee -- So, where should i be indicating this? On the submit? Here?-- Data connections for Submit is: http://sharepoint.bankofamerica.com/sites/ColumbiaOnline/JLee/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?WSDL

    Hi Clay,

I posted a reply to your last post but didn't see a post back. Can you continue to help me out for a little bit more? Would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

    I'm also running into a problem...InfoPath 2003, SharePoint 2007

    (1) I have no problem retrieving list data. I fat-fingered in values into the Sharepoint List to prove this worked. It does.

    (2) I created the CAML as a retrieve data connection.

    (3) I added the CAML's fields to the form (via Data Source, grab field, drop, select repeating table).

    (4) I created a submit data connection to my list. (https://sharepoint/_vti_bin/lists.asmx)...note for me it is https

    (5) I created the ListName field with the GUI
            %7B58B7B962%2D58D0%2D4368%2D8359%2D8CC5C6ECD18A%7D
            translated to {58B7B962-58D0-4368-8359-8CC5C6ECD18A}
I ensured to delete the {}'s from the GUI when defining the value of ListName.

    (6) I referenced the ListName and the CAML within the submit data connection as appropriate.

When I fill out the table created by the CAML Field/Name table I hit the submit button (references the submit data connection). The pop up window says it worked. However back on my list nothing was updated. Nothing was updated via the Retrieve data connection and confirmed via directly visiting the SharePoint List.

I then went back and confirmed I had the correct GUI. I then went back to my submit reference https:// and changed it from the direct subsite to the major site. The major site reference gives the SOAP error so many are getting (ie. the list doesn't exist there).

    What the heck?

    Another wrinkle:

I created a totally different form for another purpose for the same main site, different subsite. Within this form I figured out how to add dates from the InfoPath form (2003) into the Sharepoint Calendar. Same basic principle (GUI, etc) but accomplished via programming.

So I know within the list I'm working with I can send data (i can retrieve). I know within the website I can submit data. However I cannot get both working within this specific list?

Are you doing an insert or an update action? This needs to be stated in the CAML.

I am guessing it is a syntax type issue. Unfortunately on a lot of these there is no errors it just does not work.

Re: Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

In the CAML, Cmd="New". In the submit data connection UpdateListItems

I'm going to end up using Update as well. The objective is a form for processing Visit Requests (to certain facilities).

User picks a code and facility information (name, address, etc) is auto populated. If the facility code isn't there they click a button to switch to a view to add a facility to the sharepoint list (the problem). However in the first main view, where they just select facility by code, I also want the ability to update some information that isn't that static (certain POC). Make then apply the real correction not me.

I've been going crazy messing with things. The quotes in the CAML, a ' ' vs a " " (I noticed in Matt Faus' example the first field, title, using the single quotation marks while all others use doubles...specific reason?)...I was even convinced it was because I created the custom list in datasheet view vs. normal custom list (obviously not an issue but I'm desperate).

My next trick to to try lower case everything. In getting the infopath to sharepoint calendar to work I accidentally discovered if my infopath fields were lowercase (and of course susequent programming) everything worked...but a total change to first letter uppercase didn't work.

Oh and one more thing, my data connection has tns:listName...while the Matt Faus example shows an s0 (or sO?). What's that about?

Re: Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

The xpath tns vs s0 is trivial, you just need to make sure you use what is in your form.

Have you considered using an XML file or database to house this information?

That could be simpler. I have used a SharePoint list to keep this data, but only because the list would be updated via SharePoint. If you are going to manage the updates and everything within your form there are easier data sources to work with.

Have you tried the sample scenario? I know the first time I did this I did the sample in a test form and list and then slowly expanded until I knew how to do it for my final purposes.

Re: Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

I was trying to avoid the sample as a test, but it's use in inevitable; which is unfortunate since I'm really doing the same exact thing...only with more fields of different names. Nothing complicated extra.

I know we're going to be using SQL through SharePoint for our reporting from our form libraries (once we convert to InfoPath 2007 and use InfoPath Form Services). I just have much easier control over SharePoint lists and I do SQL.

We don't have total control over SharePoint as we purchase the service from another group within the organization. The more I independent I can be the better.

Re: Running into an issue with Infopath to Sharepoint list example

I have become one of those people who if he just did the example as shown, and then modified from there, I would never have had to post a 'problem'.

Right off my first error was not including 'Title' in the CAML. I went back and added it later to no avail. I think it was just mad at me for messing up in the first place.

I strictly followed the example and upon getting it to work I added more fields, still worked, deleted the example fields, still worked.

oh, by the way, this might be a simpler approach to it.. http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/7997/29085.aspx#29085
