Path of a browser enabled email???

I have had a persistent problem with sending an email from inside our firewall to the outside world.  What I want to do is send out a text message (SMS) to a cell phone to alert me when a new item has been created in a SharePoint Library.  The InfoPath form is browser enabled and only lets me send emails within our firewall.  When I try to send an email to a domain outside of our firewall, I receive an error that says I need to check my server configuration settings.  So my question for you is, What path does a browser enabled InfoPath form email take to go to the outside world?  We run an Exchange Server, a firewall, a SharePoint Server, and an Antivirus Server.    The settings I need to change differ greatly based on the path that it takes.  Does InfoPath itself try and send the email, in which case a port could be blocked, or does SharePoint or Exchange need to be adjusted?  If you know anything about this at all, please help me!Thanks in advance!

SharePoint email configuration doesn't provide a place to specify a username and password which is required for Exchange to send out email to external mail servers.  This had to be locked down to help prevent spam so there is no way around this.  Mail servers will not send out external email unless you log into them with a username and password.

One idea you could try is to send it to an internal mail address and setup a rule in Outlook ( that runs on the Exchange server) for that mail account that auto forwards every email to another email address.  In your case that second email address would be the external email address to T-Mobile or wherever you are sending it so it goes out as a text message.  I think this only works if the external email is in the global user directory.  I don't remember exactly how to configure this but I've done it before so I know it can be done.  I had a user that wanted every email he received to also go to his hotmail account.

Haha! Of course this email arrives the day after I find a work-around for the problem!  John you are absolutely correct on every suggestion.  In order to fix the problem I did the following:

    1.  Made SharePoint email my Outlook inbox
    2. Created a contact in Active Directory for the external email account that I needed it to be email to.  (This link walks you through it step-by-step with graphics- http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/MF015.html)
    3. Went in to my own Account on Active Directory and configured it to forward all emails to this external account (explained in link)
    4. I ended up creating a yahoo account because I didn't want every email sent to the phone, just the SharePoint ones.
    5. Set up Mobile Alert in Yahoo! and created a rule to alert me whenever a sharepoint email arrived.

The reason that I didn't create a rule in Outlook to do this for me is because it would not send to an external email account as well.  The mobile alert through yahoo works fine for me, but if anyone else feels there is a better way I am not closed to suggestions.

Thanks again for your help John!  I hope others find this before they go through the tinkering I had to do..
