    Populate Fields from Drop-Drown Selection

Once an item is selected from a drop-down, is there a way to populate other fields based on the drop-down criteria?

I was hoping to populate other fields with queries to a local database using the drop-down selection as the query criteria (drop-down changed event I'm assuming).

I'm using VSTA for the code. Any help in the syntax would be appreciated or if I'm way off base, let me know.

    Thanks.

In the form you can use rules to set your query fields with the dropdown selection. In code you would probably use the OnChange.  You need the trigger to occur and then the action is moving the current value from the Drop Down to the Query field and then also probably run your query so that the data updates all in one.

    Thanks for the response!

This is very new to me and there does not seem to be many InfoPath resources yet.

Matt's article ( http://www.infopathdev.com/howto/tutorials/default.aspx?i=9111ef580f95479890fc18fb2c5bac85 ) finally made sense after I posted this thread. It seems InfoPath can accomplish many things through the field's Properties, instead of having to create code manually.

My next steps are to allow the users to edit the data that is being displayed and provide a mechanism to add a new record. I'm assuming these can be done with functions associated with buttons?

Good I am glad you are getting the hang of it.

You can submit your data back to the DB, with the stock InfoPath form. If you take your data fields and put them in a repeating table you will have the ability to insery new rows.

You may want to check out the Database Accelerator.  Qdabra Database Accelerator Suite Version 2.1.2808 - Developer

It includes a bunch of web services so that you can interact with multiple tables, active directory, etc.  If you are going to be creating InfoPath front ends to your backend data then I think it saves a lot of time and gives you a lot more features.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

The rules work fine on one view that I've created. I'm having trouble with the same task on another view though.

I believe I've completed the same tasks, but I'm not able to auto-populate on a different view that is not associated with the first view that worked correctly???
