Mapping to a SharePoint profile column

I would like my employee ID (string) field to a Profile column in a SharePoint list.  When InfoPath creates the column in the document library it will only create a column of type string.  If I create a site column in SharePoint called MyEmployeeID of type 'profile' the Property Promoting screen won't let me map to the column.

However, in my workflow  set up in SharePoint Designer I can set the value of the profile column from any user ID (domain\userid) that I have in the form and it sets the profile without a problem.

Does anyone know a way around this?

    Thanks,

     Nate

I am trying to accomplish the same thing, were you ever able to get this resolved?

Also, if I wanted to use a workflow to do this can you please explain how I go about it?

    Thanks in advance!

    Kevin
