    Blanks in Cascading list

    Hi

I have read some of the info about this problem and I am even more confused! Can you tell me (simply and slowly!) how to remove the blanks from my cascading list of Directorate, PI and Service. I'm not going to lose sleep over it but it would make the form look so much better if there was not a blank space in the list.

Thanks for all of the help so far by the way.

The best way is to not return any blank values in the datasource you use to populate those lists. But if this is not possible, you can use a filter to not show any items that have blank values. Then they will not be available in the drop-down lists.

    Hi Greg

I have tried to add a filter but I still get a blank field at the top of each field in the drop down. There are no blanks in the data.

    Cheers

My misunderstanding... I thought it was coming from your data source.

InfoPath *always* inserts a blank at the top. How else is the user supposed to make "no selection" in the drop-down? Granted, this is not always desirable. There is no way around this in the designer, however, you can modify the view .xsl file manually to remove the <option></option> code from the drop-down. This modification will persist until you modify the drop-down in any way in the desinger again, after which you will need to remove the code again from the view.

I used to complain about these all the time, but finally decided that it is rare that I actually care that the blank option is not present. So now I just leave them alone. If I have a hard-fast requirement to not have it present, I follow the steps outlined in the previous paragraph.

Recommendation--leave them alone unless its critical they aren't there.

    Good luck.
