Cross Domain data submission and retrieval.

    Hi,

I have created an access database and a form using infopath. I have published the form to a sharpoint portal but I am having problems getting the form to work properly due to security reasons.

The form retrieves data to populate drop down menus from an Access database that resides on a seperate server address to that of the portal.

//xxx.168.201.16/. This server has been set up with anomnomous security access and hasn't been mapped.

When you click on fill out this form within the portal site, I receive the following message afetr seeing a MS ole DB inialization screen and clicking ok.

The following DataObject either cannot be created or cannot be initialized: Quarter
The query cannot be run for the following DataObject: Quarter
InfoPath cannot run the specified query.
InfoPath cannot connect to the data source.
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\xxx.168.201.16\pfr\Europe\Logistics\Global Metrics\KPI Performance Form.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.

If I click start, run I get prompted for my user name and password to connect to the server, if I enter the same passowrd and username as that of the portal site and enter the folder. I can then open the form and submit data to the access database that sits on a sepeate addresss. However, everytime I log on the form forgets the passsword and then will not work again untill and do the run thing again.

I know the problem is realated to cross domain access, i have tried changing the security settings amongst numerous other things.

If could somehow get the form to prompt for a password and username to access the server where the access database is hidden before it opens I BELIEVE IT WOULD WORK.

You guys are my last hope the IT department don't support it and so far haven't been able to solve the problem.

    1. "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\xxx.168.201.16\pfr\Europe\Logistics\Global Metrics\KPI Performance Form.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data."

The above lines in your error says that the file is opened by some other person, can you cross check whether some other person has a lock/opened on it.

    2. If I click start, run I get prompted for my user name and password to connect to the server, if I enter the same passowrd and username as that of the portal site and enter the folder.

Can you explain this sentence clearly? Which folder you are entering?

    3. One thing you can try is, try to access the database from your local machine through a .net application and check whether it works through it.
I am specifically specifying your local machine because Infopath application runs on your local machine settings not on your server(portal) machine settings.

Re: Cross Domain data submission and retrieval.

    Hi Agni,

    1. The file is definately not open by anyone else and it hasn't been locked.

    2. The infopath form is published to a sharepoint portal site. 192.168.201.15.

The access database that provides the data for the drop down menus in the infopath form and that receives the submitted data from the form is on a seperate project server 192.168.201.16, which has anonymous access permissions.

When I click on fill out this form, I first get MS ole initialization prompting for a username, password and provider string???? and then I get the error message I described before

InfoPath cannot connect to the data source.
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\192.168.201.16\pfr\Europe\Logistics\Global Metrics\KPI Performance Form.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.

Alternatively, depending on the setting of Internet Explorer. I get a message stating that I am trying to access data across domains and that my computer doesn't allow it. I have checked that the custom setting within the security options are enabled.

However, if I click on Run from the start menu and enter the server address, before it opens it prompts me for my username and password for the server. If I enter the credentials, which are the same as for the portal site. I am then able to get the infopath form and access database to work, at least untill I log out again.

When I spoke about the folder, it is the folder within the 192.168.201.16 project server, where the access database is located.

I've tried adding the two server address's to my trusted sites so that it doesn't prompt me for the password and username but it doesn't work.

    3. If I could get the infoform path to prompt me for the password to access the server where the acesss database is located before it opens it would work as I know it works once I have logged onto the server through the Run thing.

    4. I am affraid I am not very computer literate and have very little experience in using infopath and access. I have been trying for 4 months to get this to work. And to date my IT department have drawn a blank. What do you mean by through a net apllication?

    5. I have managed to extract the XSD files into a folder and can see where I can alter the password etc. but don't really know what to do???

I really appreciate your help and would love to get this working. I hope that this sort of answer your questions.

By ".net" application what I meant is write a console "C#" application and try to access your database through this application.
By trying this we will know whether it is an InfoPath application issue or the general security issue. If it works well with your "C#" application then it could a Infopath application issue.

I thought we can start with this and think about what to do to make the Infopath solution work.
