Submit selection does not include database

I saw a post from 1/17 by MFaus that stated "You don't have to use web services, but you will have to use code. Setup your database data connection to receive data and you will still be able to write to it using XDocument.GetDOM( "NameOfDataBaseConnection" ). Once the database is linked in as a secondary data source it can be accessed very similiarly to how you access a XML data source."

I am having the same trouble as the user he replied to did and don't know what to do, but I know that the above statement is over my head. I am a newbie and need more detailed information as to what to do to connect my form back to the database to dump my data. Can you help? I have no knowledge of XML, but I follow instruction pretty well.

The weird thing is, I had used Submit to Database before in other forms I had created, so I am perplexed as to why this no longer shows up in my new form. Is there a way to go back to the way it was? I usually like change, but.....

I appreciate any help you can give me.

    Janice

To write to a database only using InfoPath you will have to make the database a data connection on the Main DOM. Do this by choosing Design a From from Data Connection when you make a new form.

The view that is automatically generated included a button called New Record and you can use this button to insert new records into the database.

Could you explain a little further your situation? What is different between the forms you had working and the forms you are working on now?

    Matt:

Honestly, I am not sure what happened. I had created a form about three months ago and was able to create a Submit to Database button. When I created a new form yesterday, the option to submit to database was not available. I didn't do anything differently than before.

Regarding your reply, I deleted that button from the form not knowing Can it be recreated?

It might be a difference in service pack versions - what service pack are you running now?

Yes, you can add another New Record button in. Just add a regular button, double-click it, choose New Record from the Action drop-down list, and then click OK.

    Matt:

I am currently on SP2. I tried to use the New Record button to submit back to the database but it doesn't submit anything. Do I need to put something in the button to make it do this? If so, what? (This seemed like such a simple project.)

Sorry to be such a pain - no money in the budget for training. thanks for all of your help.

Could my problem be due to not having a primary key specified? The only primary key I am using is an autonumber, which I don't know how to replicate in the form. I am not sure that I can use a primary key in this database, since it is just designed to tabulate information, not to record unique information. Any suggestions?
