Dang it I think I already have a flaw in the solution (at least for my scenario)

The data I am after in Form A is a  few child nodes in and I need to filter it for a row (example where ID=5).

A solution path I was headed down was to use a SharePoint web service call "GetItem" in the COPY web service page (https://{yoursharepointsite}/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx) Then bring back the data and convert back into XML to traverse and filter the data I needed.  It accepts one parameter which is the URL to the XML file.

In the GUI, data connections are defined as full URLs, so you can't do relative paths without doing it programmatically (as far as I know).

Ah, in the case of needing a specific row in a repeating table, I don't think there is any easy way to do it without a custom solution.  I build all my forms without code as I am not a dev, so anything in SYM Wong-A-Ton's realm would probably require her help or help from one of the Qdabra devs here.

After spending 4 days with the "There are multiple root elements"  error from submitting from infopath (browser enabled through sharepoint) through a webservice and to a sql server, my team was able to fix this.

We fixed it by changing the submit in the data connection wizard to include "xml subtree, including selected element" in the drop down in the parameter options for the "include" for the field or group.  (We also removed the UDC, but I don't think this had anything to do with this specific issue).
