Secondary data connection on web browser form

    Hello once again *g*

I have a new problem. I have web browser enabled form. This form has as a secondary data source a XML file which is stored on the same SharePoint in a form library. When I test my InfoPath form in InfoPath client I can connect to the XML file in SharePoint (via a Dropdown Menu Control in InfoPath). But if I open this form in web browser I became the Error:

"An error occurred accessing a data source."

I can "start over" or "continue" - when I click on continue the form will be load but no entries in the dropdown control...

    Is that a bug?

    Hi HappyDigit,
I think you need to either convert the data connection to be a) UDC file (see Tools\Data Connections\Convert) or b) include the XML file in the solution. You could also just use a SharePoint list for dropdown controls. Take a look at ourhttp://formsboard.com/ site it has a couple samples of this - Sales Order and Sales Leads. Login using [email protected] and pw=InfoPath2007. Good luck.

    Hey!

I tried a connection using UDCX files. The result is the same error.
SharePoint Lists are not adequate for my requirements because I can define a column in a SharePoint list as multiline and I can bind this column to a multiline data control in InfoPath but unfortunately if you test it out you will see, that no line-break will be realized in InfoPath. The line-break is characteristic by to spaces.
Including the XML as resource file is a workaround but I want to give the possibility to the user to change the text-templates which are stored in the XML File. If I use resource file it is not reasonable for user to do this.

    Hi again HappyDigit,
I think it's an access issue. There is a page in SharePoint Admin that allows cross site authentication within the same server. I forget where it is but we had to turn this on to get our forms to pull from a Web servier connected to SQL. I'll ask David, but see if you can search for that. I spent 10 minutes and couldn't find it.

I would recommend checking the log file to see exactly what the problem is first:
Go to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS" (or wherever your SharePoint logs are)
Repeat the operation that causes a failure in IPFS and check the latest entry in the log (it should have "Forms Server" in it). It should give you a clue to what specifically is wrong. You can also use the Application Event Viewer to get some more details.

To check your IPFS settings, do the following in SharePoint Central Admin:
Application Management | Configure InfoPath Forms Services

You might need to check "Allow cross-domain data access for user form templates that use connection settings in a data connection file"

Finally, make sure your UDC is correct. You might read more on the format here:http://blogs.msdn.com/infopath/archive/2006/10/30/the-anatomy-of-a-udc-file.aspx

    Hope it helps

    Hello David,

I did what you said and here is the error log :-)

The Error "There are multiple root elements" is not right. I checked the XML file with a tool and it is well formed. Actualy the XML file cames from InfoPath ;) In this file are a repeating section.

    my:email
    - my:templates

    templates is the repeating section.
Note: If I open the form in InfoPath client all worked well, if I open the form with formserver I got this error.

Has anyone found a solution for this?  I'm having the exact same problem and I get event ID's 7tfk and 82fy.  I have been troubleshooting with MSFT for a few days now and they seem to be coming up empty handed.  The only thing I havn't tried is publishing the form with a certificate...

    Hi,

I'm facing with the same problem, where i've created drop down list that connected to the database to retrieve user full name. I've created UDC file in the sharepoint but still it prompt the same error.

My log file store this error:

OK I am having the exact same issue as the first poster(happydigit).  Is there any solution for this issue - because if not I am going to have to a major redesign to my application to work around the issue.

It seems crazy to think I cant talk to a XML as a secondary data source when it is sitting in the same folder my form instance resides. (no cross domain issues here).

Re: Secondary data connection on web browser form

OK does anybody have any creative work arounds?

My requirements are that I am trying to display some of the results/data(xml) of form A as a secondary data source for form B (read only). This would be using Form Services 07 - so web enabled is a required.

It seems like a simple enough request that other people have had to accomplished.

Work arounds that I might look into are:

    1) Creating a Web Service that grabs the data of form A(a plain old XML file) and passes them through - because it works through web services

     2) Take the data of form A and dump them into a SharePoint List. This is not the best options for two reasons a) my data could change (someone updates form A)  and b) I dont know a way of automating it.

Thanks for any advice any experts out there might have

Is Form A an InfoPath form?  if so, can't you publish it to SharePoint, promote all the fields to the SharePoint form library where it resides, and then create a data connection to that list for consuming its data?  The data in Form B would always pull real time data from Form A.

If not, then what actually is your Form A, and why do you need to duplicate the data in Form B instead of using Views in Form A?

Re: Secondary data connection on web browser form

    @warrtalon  GENIUS IDEA  - seriously!

That would solve the issue and yes Form A is a infopath form.

Do you happen to know if you can save that secondary data source path as a relative path.  The reason I ask is I have multiple instances of Form A which contain different data - but there is only one per folder.  So Form B will be trying to pull Form A's (read only data) from the same folder Form B is currently in.

I was succesfull at changing the datasource path in code during testing so I can try that - but using a relative URL would not require any code.

Thanks a million for your reply!

PS The Form A data I am pulling in is purely forthe users reference - Form B's data is unique. Each of the 4 fields I need can be a few paragraphs so passing them in the URL as parametes is not an option.
