Sorting merged Infopath fields in SharePoint

I have created a safety reporting system in Infopath (multiple reports/views) and published it to a SharePoint form library. In my form I am using a repeating table for Participant Details (name, team, dept.). When I submit the form, the contents in the repeating table are merged and very nicely put in seperate rows in the SharePoint library. So far, so good.
However, when I want to sort or filter one of these merged columns in the SharePoint library, the system wont let me. Apparently, I cannot sort merged fields (makes sence, but is very frustrating). Is there any way to do/fix this? Reporting to management and thus the success of this reporting system depends on finding a solution.

Hi Susy and welcome to our forum!
That's correct and this is one of the major limitations of SharePoint. It only supports flat lists. The merged list is essentially a concatenated string and that's why you can't sort them. You could use our Database Accelerator to shred to SQL and create an SRS view on top of it that sorts the elements in your collection, but that's probably another week or two of work for you.
