SPS Permissions

Within Sharepoint there are various groups of users (Reader, Contributor, Web Designer, et al). Is there any programatic way of determining what group the current user is part of?

Hi,
The info was very useful. But is there any sharepoint webservice that can fetch the details of the current user in local machine.
