    Lazy Default Value

I have a list with customized forms in infopath. It is for a browser. In SharePoint I set the default value for a drop down choice list. When I create a new record in infopath and leave the default value in place when I submit the form, the value gets recorded to the list. However, when I open a record for editing (using the edit Icon in the list)(and opening a different 'edit' form), if this field has no value, it does get populated with the default value, but on clicking 'Submit' the value does NOT get saved to the list!!?? If I choose another value from the drop down and then re-choose the default value, then it does gets saved on submit. But just leaving the default value there is like having no value. Nothing gets saved on submit. Most of the time these fields will record a value when you submit the initial form to create the record, so for many purposes this odd behavior is not important. But if you do have an empty field in a record being edited (say because of change in the design) it is very disconcerting. Is this behavior normal? Do I have something turned off? Thanks,

I find default values really problematic in a lot of circumstance. Have you considered using a form load rule instead? Just leave the list column without a default and add a rule in the form load rules to set the field to the default value you want if the field is blank - or if you only want to do this in a new form, if the ID field is blank.
