    Hi Rilliam,
YES, It is possible to populate columns of a FORM library in SharePoint from an InfoPath form. Go to Tools->Form Options->Columns and add one. Then, publish your form to SharePoint. Voila!

What i need to do is populate the colums of a file record in a file library.

Say i have a tif file in a file library on sharepoint and i have customized columbs, one of which is named: Consultant

I need my form to populate the consultant field for that record in the file library.

My understanding is that infopath cannot publish to a file library, only a form library.

    Hi again,
Correct, but you can write code to save the form on submit to a form lib and you might be able to programmatically set the column info, but seems like a lot of work and hardcoded. I can't think of a good way to accomplish what you want. Why are you mixing XML forms and files though?

I want to be able to search our library using the metadata entered into the infopath form.

I have an intern working on it and he is telling me IT IS possible programmatically. If anyone has any code to contribute or suggests or comments, I really appreciate it.

We are creating a file library for drawing scans. I am using sharepoint and infopath because:

    1. sharepoint has needed document control functions
    2. sharepoint has more robust searching capabiliy
    3. sharepoint facilitates multiple user view/experience.
    4. sharepoint also acts as a web service
    5. I am not a programmer and our organization needs this emmidiately, but we have intern programmers.
    6. Later we can build a web part to add more functionality.

I see. Using InfoPath to edit meta data for search makes good sense. SharePoint has a ton of features. I'm sure you'll figure it out and enlighten all of us! :) I totally agree on your reasons. SharePoint has some limitations, but sounds like a great solution for your needs. We do a ton of SharePoint integration using InfoPath but have yet to do a meta data editor.
