Infopath email custom body not working as expected

Hi, so I've been attempting to generate a custom email body using tutorials I've seen on this site and others.  I even took a piece of example code posted here, no matter what I try the view content does not make it into the email.  Is there some sort a system setting or setting within Infopath that could be blocking this from working?  This issue is not related to switching views.

Create a simple test form, add an email submit connection, set to display the current view, add a few controls and test. What happens? I'm using IP 2013, Office 2016, Windows 10 and email works as anticipated for me....

I have tried a test form, I even tried a form you yourself posted as an example, and no matter what I do outlook doesn't populate the e-mail.  Maybe it's an issue with the email client?  I tried outlook and thunderbird and neither worked.  I am using IP 2013 on Windows 10.  Does it always need to go through outlook to send the email?

I'm at a loss, right now I'm looking into creating a workflow.  It's already sending emails correctly on adding to a list, I just am having trouble wrapping my brain about adding to the list via infopath

You may need to use workflows - you do need to use Outlook, if this is a Filler form. Have your form submit to a library and you can have a workflow on the library.

Hmm okay.  Do you have to export the form differently if you want to use it on a website?

This whole process has been so insanely difficult, with all these custom fields relying on each other, and now interfacing with the lists.  Learning to use all the SP libraries in sharepoint was tough enough but infopath has just been horrendous.

Is there a reason I shouldn't just recommend to my company that we ditch this entire system and rewrite the forms in sharepoint with javascript controls?

I'm attempting to reproduce the method described here:

Ouch, and that blog post was written 13 years ago. So, I think you are saying you are trying to use an InfoPath form to submit to multiple lists? There just isn't an easy way to do that out of the box - there are a couple products the company I worked for created for this specific need. I really don't understand your other questions - what do you mean by "export the form differently to use it on a website"? Are you maybe talking about publishing a form as browser-enabled?

Ok so that was the wrong tutorial.  Will post again later with results.
