Check for blank fields without submit

I've got a form where a number of the fields use the 'Cannot be blank' checkbox in the properties. However, it seems like the only time this is evaluated is on Submit.

I'm using this trick along with something like this to send a custom "view" in the email body.

The problem is that since my "Submit" button is using Rules and Custom Code to do this, there's no actual Submit action occurring and the user is not prevented from sending the form with nothing filled out.

Is there a way to force it to check for blank fields without doing a Submit action?

Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.

    Next problem:
If the error check fails in code, the user is presented with the read-only EmailSection because the rule that sets the ShowEmailSection flag has already fired.

Is there a way to include the error check in the rule conditions or reset the hidden flag value in code?
